Hillary Hotline

Sen. Clinton's campaign staff has been sending out regular updates. Below is the "Hillary Hotline" that I got via email yesterday.

HILLARY HOTLINE

What’s Hot?

* Hillary continued her focus on stabilizing the economy this week, urging action from both sides of the aisle. Watch her remarks on the Senate floor here.

On a call with New York reporters, Hillary said: “You’re not going to find anyone who believes that this bill is perfect…But there is no choice…We cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good, or in this case, the enemy of what’s necessary.” Listen here. Read here.

* In a LIVE radio interview this morning, Hillary praised Senators Obama and Biden after last night’s VP debate. She told Ryan Seacrest: “Last night, like in the first debate, Joe and Barack conveyed the sense of mastery and expertise that we have to have in our next Democratic White House.”

* Hillary traveled to Michigan last weekend to campaign for Senators Obama and Biden. She made stops in Flint, Grand Ledge, and Grand Rapids.

Hillary on the economy in Flint, MI: “We may have to fix this, but boy we need to fire the group of people like the Republicans who got us in this mess…That’s why we need new leadership and that’s why I’m asking you to do everything you can to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”

* President Clinton traveled to Florida for Senators Obama and Biden on Wednesday where he told the crowd: "Here's why you ought to be for Barack Obama…He's got better answers -- better answers for the economy, for energy, for healthcare, for education. He knows what it will take to get this country back on track.”

* On Thursday, Hillary endorsed Senate candidate Rick Noriega in McAllen, TX: “We need his leadership and his experience. We need his voice and his commitment…On issue after issue what Rick Noriega stands for, what he has fought for, what his life exemplifies is really a story of Texas and America." Read more.

* With the Latino community critical to the victories of Senators Obama and Biden and Democrats across the country, Hillary is meeting with volunteers and supporters today at the El Paeso Inn in Los Angeles, CA to discuss the importance of the upcoming election and Hillary Sent Me!.

* Earlier this week, Hillary sat down with Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier to talk about Hillary Sent Me!, the first Presidential debate, and everything Hillary is doing to help elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Watch here.

* On the airwaves in Ohio this week, Hillary encouraged voters to get out and vote early during Magic Week (deadline is Monday, Oct. 6). Listen here.

* In the HillPAC spotlight this week: A Special Bond - three women senators we need in the Senate.

HillPAC released an email today from Hillary:

“I hope you'll join me in supporting three great women running for the U.S. Senate this year: Mary Landrieu, running for reelection to the Senate from Louisiana; and Kay Hagan in North Carolina and Jeanne Shaheen in NH, running to join Mary and me in the Senate in January.”

Visit www.hillpac.com for more information.

* Last Saturday, Hillary Sent Me! officially kicked off with hundreds of volunteers gathering in Manchester, NH despite rain and bad weather.

Hillary welcomed volunteers via telephone Saturday afternoon: “I could not be prouder than I am today...I hear it is raining, but I know that that won't deter you from getting out and knocking on doors and making calls for Barack and for Jeanne, for state senators and state representatives.” Full transcript here.

Click here for a blog post from the very first NH volunteer to sign up.

Hillary Sent Me! focuses on Ohio this weekend: Gov. Ted Strickland and congressional candidate Sharen Neuhardt hosted a call with reporters today and encouraged Ohioans to vote early and sign up for Hillary Sent Me! at www.hillpac.com.

October 11th and 12th: Hillary Sent Me! focuses on Pennsylvania. To sign up, visit www.hillpac.com or email hillarysentme@paforchange.com.

* On Tap for Next Week: Hillary speaks at the 8th Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee Luncheon in New York City and travels to Arkansas for events and fundraising. Hillary will also co-host a fundraiser for Eric Massa and campaign with Paul Tonko, both running for NY congressional seats.

* Stay tuned for a big trip to Pennsylvania the weekend of October 12th

With McCain behind, how negative will the republicans go?

With Obama's increasing poll numbers, I feel a full court swift boat effort on its way from the McCain camp.

We have seen and heard it all before. Voter intimidation, crazy robocalls and nasty ads. The republican's are masters at winning elections and have many tricks up their sleeves.

Remember the congressional campaign of Tammy Duckworth of Illinois? Duckworth, a disabled Iraqi war veteran, lost by just 2%. When the republican knew from polling data they were going to lose this solid republican seat, they attacked her patriotism, sent misquoted mailers and made really strange robo calls. Voters in the district received non stop repeated calls that sounded at first like they were from Duckworth. In fact, they were sent by the Republican National Committee. The intent of the call was to call the voters so many times that they were turned off by Duckworth's candidacy.

Instead of challenging an opponent on issues, the republicans used dirty tricks like the repeated annoying robo call to win the campaign. In a close election like this, I would not be surprised if we see these tactics. Sphere: Related Content

Hillary on the economy

I have been so busy moving and working the election that I neglected to include these bullet points released last week from Hillary about the economy:

Hillary Clinton’s Principles For Action - Rescuing Wall Street and Main Street
* America deserves leadership that understands the challenges we're facing in the world and leadership that can actually get the results we're looking for. The Democrats inherited a troubled economy in 1993 – we fixed it then and we can fix it again.
* If taxpayers like what's gone on the last eight years and if they are happy about this Wall Street meltdown and having to put $700 billion into trying to rescue these banks so we can keep lending and keep the economy afloat, then they have a ticket on the Republican side with John McCain and Sarah Palin. Hillary Clinton doesn’t believe most Americans want to buy into that and that we need to have checks and balances, not just a blank check.
* The Republicans had their chance to fix the economy and look at where this country is today. Barack Obama and Joe Biden offer the positive solutions and real change we need.
* Taxpayers must have control over the purse strings and cannot just be left holding the bag of this huge bailout. We need to inject some reality-based checks and balances and not just give the Administration a blank check.
* Video of Senator Clinton on today’s morning shows is available at: http://blog.hillaryclinton.com/

Given the extraordinary nature of the government's market intervention proposal, Senator Clinton believes we must:

TAKE BOLD ACTION ON THE MORTGAGE CRISIS
* The next step in the credit crisis should be the creation of a new Home Owner's Loan Corporation (HOLC) to launch an effective mortgage modification effort on the scale and scope of the successful Depression-era program.
* Today, 2 million homeowners carry mortgages worth more than their homes, holding $3 trillion in mortgage debt. (And another 1.5 million are carrying mortgages worth another $1 trillion that are set to increase in coming months and years.) Senator Clinton was among the first to propose a modern-day HOLC, which bought mortgages from failed banks and modified terms to keep people in their homes. The original HOLC saved one million homes and returned a profit to the Treasury.
* With the government holding the note on so many of these mortgage securities, Senator Clinton is proposing a temporary moratorium on foreclosures and a temporary freeze on mortgage rate hikes in adjustable rate loans.

REPRESENT THE INTERESTS OF TAXPAYERS
* If the Treasury proposal is enacted in its current form, the American government would assume enough financial risk to effectively become the majority shareholder in the companies taxpayers have bailed out.
* Therefore, the American people are bearing the risk and deserve to reap the reward in a shared equity model, giving our country a stake in the profits of the companies they've saved.
* Mortgage securities bought by taxpayers must be valued fairly and accurately at prices disclosed in real time, with checks and reporting requirements to prevent abuse. Senator Clinton is calling for safeguards and oversight to prevent Americans from overpaying at the same time and ensure that taxpayers are not burdened by overvalued debt while companies exploit the bailout program for profit.

REFORM WALL STREET AND CURB CORPORATE ABUSE
* Companies must end the practice of awarding compensation packages to executives irrespective of job performance or shareholder interest.
* Senator Clinton has proposed legislation to give shareholders a greater say in executive pay and to close loopholes designed to conceal executive salaries. Senator Clinton has proposed requiring companies that benefit from the infusion of taxpayer dollars to tie executive pay to long-term economic performance instead of short-term stock performance.
* Senator Clinton believes rescued firms must commit to stricter risk management standards.
* This initiative must be transparent and fully open to the public if it is going to work. Conflicts of interest must be reported and made public so that investors that drive up the price of certain bonds aren't responsible for the government buying those same bonds at the higher price. A difference a week makes! What the candidates are saying about the economy.

This has not been a good week. The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the sale of Merrill Lynch and the government buyout of AIG all happened in one week. What's next?

Last week we were talking about lipstick on pigs and this week the debate has shifted on the economy. I am glad the debate has shifted but unfortunately it took three financial failures to make it happen.

I was very disappointed by John McCain's remarks that he thought "the fundamentals of our economy are strong". I can't imagine why he would make a statement like that after millions of people are being laid off, losing their homes and major institutions are closing their doors. What fundamentals?

I invite you to take a look at an article by David Gross from Newsweek "Fundamentally Speaking. Is there any excuse for McCain's gaffe about the economy?" The author looks at the many weaknesses in the economy and demonstrates that there are more items that are not fundamentally sound than positive outlooks. Click here to read the article.

I hope the debate changes and focuses on the economy. To get an idea of the candidate's economic plans I would encourage you to look at their websites. Both candidates have sections addressing the economy.

I am very excited to tell you that there is nothing on each website regarding lipstick on pigs or on hunting down a moose.

What's at Stake?

The following was emailed to me from another Hillary supporter now backing Obama:

Sen. Clinton has commented "We don't need four more years of the last eight years, more economic stagnation and less affordable health care, more high gas prices and less alternative energy, more jobs getting shipped overseas and fewer jobs created here at home, more skyrocketing debt, and home foreclosures, and mounting bills that are crushing middle-class families, more war and less diplomacy, more of a government where the privileged few come first and everyone else comes last…No way. No how. No McCain. No Palin.”

Economy

* Hillary ran for President to change the Bush-Cheney economic policy, to rebuild the middle class and reward hard work, and invest in jobs here in the US. She knows this economy is leaving millions of hard working Americans behind and endangering our country's future.

* McCain/Palin support continuing the Bush economic policies of tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. They advocate privatizing social security, and their trade policies will result in continued loss of jobs.

Health Care

* Hillary believes we need a health care system that is universal, high-quality, and affordable; and she will work with the Obama/Biden Administration to achieve this critical goal.

* McCain/Palin will leave insurance companies in charge of the health care system and families on their own. McCain/Palin are even opposed to expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Equal Pay

* Hillary knows we must strengthen the equal pay laws so women like Lily Ledbetter –and every woman – gets equal pay for her work.

* McCain/Palin oppose strengthening the equal pay laws. McCain said instead of legislation allowing women to fight for equal pay, they need “education and training.“

Iraq

* Hillary believes it is time to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home with honor.

* McCain/Palin supports continuing the use of force in Iraq. McCain even suggested keeping troops in Iraq for "one hundred years or a thousand years or ten thousand years."

Judges

* Hillary believes federal judges should support and uphold our constitutional rights and respect landmarks in our nation’s history of achieving full citizenship for every citizen, including Brown v Board and Roe v Wade.

* McCain/Palin oppose the Roe decision and want it overturned. McCain has said he wants to appoint judges like Alito and Roberts. Palin opposes choice even in the case of rape and incest.

Energy

* Hillary knows we need an energy plan that makes us energy independent and that conserves our natural resources for generations to come.

* McCain/Palin: "drill baby drill Sphere: Related Content

Summary of Sen. Cliton's efforts for the Obama Biden ticket

I posted a blog entry similiar to this one on Demconwatchblog.com. You can take a look by clicking here.
A contact of mine sent the following bullet points on Sen. Clinton's efforts for the Obama Biden ticket. I thought you might be interested:
  • In events and through conference calls, Hillary and her fundraisers have raised millions for Senator Obama. As of August 23, 2008, Hillary had raised over $4 million for the Obama Campaign. She hosted a reception in Denver for 250 of her donors and asked them to help do whatever they can to raise funds for Senator Obama. Senator Clinton is traveling to Chicago on Sunday evening for a fundraising event and on September 22nd she is set to hold a fundraiser in New York City with a goal of raising $500,000 and more events are being scheduled.

  • Hillary's top women groups - including Emily's List have endorsed Obama. Hillary has urged all of the unions that endorsed her in the primary to enthusiastically back Senator Obama. On behalf of Senator Obama, Hillary has attended events with several unions including American Federation of Teachers (AFT), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), the Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA), the United Farm Workers (UFW) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).

  • Since June, Hillary has held rallies and press conferences with local reporters around the country urging her supporters to back Senator Obama including events in the battleground states - New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, New Mexico and two trips to Florida. She will be going to Ohio on behalf of Senator Obama on Sunday, September 14th and more trips are being planned. During all of her campaign events the message is clear: there is only one choice for the American people who want real solutions and positive change in this election: Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Senator Clinton has drawn a clear contrast between Senator McCain and Senator Obama on issues important to women and families including pay equity, the economy and middle class tax cuts.

  • Both Senator Clinton and President Clinton gave forceful, sweeping endorsement speeches of Senator Obama at the Denver Convention. Also in Denver, Hillary made the motion by acclamation from the convention floor officially making Senator Obama the nominee of the Democratic Party. At every event Hillary attended in Denver she reiterated her support for Senator Obama and his message of change including at the Hispanic Caucus meeting, Emily's List luncheon, Count Me In event, Families USA/SEIU healthcare event, New York delegation breakfast and at her meeting with over 3,000 delegates and supporters where she formally released her delegates.

  • Numerous staff members from Hillary's presidential campaign are now working to elect Senator Obama including policy experts, speechwriters, spokespeople, researchers and schedulers. Hillary's current staff is encouraging their volunteer network to actively engage in campaign activities on behalf of the Obama-Biden ticket, as well as key Democratic races.

Cagefight! Hillary vs. Palin?

I doubt that Hillary will be taking on the role of attack dog on last week's temporary "American Sweetheart".
Hillary supporters I know (now turned Obama), are super miffed by the Palin selection and Palin's speech that evoked Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro.

It was an insulting blow and I believe it has mobilized many former Clinton supporters behind the Obama/Biden ticket.

Hillary is now hitting the campaign trail and the question out there is whether or not she will be going after Palin. CNN's Political Ticker conteplates the tone of Clinton's campaigning at http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/08/will-clinton-go-after-palin/

The CNN blog entry quotes the Obama campaign: "Sen. Clinton will address the choice we have in this election – between a new direction for our economy or four more years of the Bush failed economic policies that McCain-Palin is offering," Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro said. "She will talk about the Obama-Biden plan for immediate and lasting relief for America's working families."

I believe that Hillary will stick to the issues of the campaign and may offer a subtle attack of Palin and McCain. But, I don't believe she will be an attack dog. It just won't play well and I am sure Hillary does not want to be portrayed as a a disgruntled former candidate. However, her silence specifically on Palin should not be viewed as any show of support for Palin.

I like a quote posted at the conservative National Revew blog that comments: "As it is, he's (Obama) asking her, "hey, sorry about that bitter primary thing, calling your husband racist, and the lack of campaign debt relief. Could you do me a favor and alienate a certain portion of your voters, obliterate your newfound respect from some corners of the right, and incinerate your chance to head a Democratic ticket in 2012 by making a kamikaze run at America's newest sweetheart, in order to save my tuchus? Thanks." The full entry can be located by clicking here.

Uncool comments about Hillary by Susan Sarandon

Check out the article "Sarandon Calls Clinton a whiner" on SFGATE.COM. Her comments are completely unnecessary after Clinton gave such a powerful endorsement of Sen. Obama last week.

The article is located at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=7&entry_id=29895

Here is a bit from the article:

"Susan Sarandon has launched a scathing attack on former presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, branding her a "whiner" for allegedly blaming sexism for her failure to land the Democratic nomination.

The actress has vowed never to play Clinton in a film, insisting she doesn't have enough respect for the politician, who was the first woman to run for U.S. presidency but lost to rival Barack Obama earlier this year."

Gustav keeping delegates in Denver

I was wishing for more fun time in Denver and I got it!

After a trip downtown checking things out for the last time today, I got a message from American Airlines that our flight was canceled and scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday). It appears from other delegates that they are stuck in Denver as well.

One more day of fun in Denver! Heading back downtown tonight for dinner and drinks. Looking for deals on convention trinkets. If you have spotted a good place to get any, drop me a note at jeffstrater at gmail.com Sphere: Related Content

Hillary signs on Tuesday night

I saw a blog commentary about the Hillary signs that the crowd was waving on Tuesday. An interesting tidbit is that they had a disclaimer on the sign that they were paid by the Obama campaign. Sphere: Related Content

Media

There are bloggers and media everywhere. Here are some shots from the convention floor. Most of the networks have a booth in the suite area of the arena and then a floor platform. You can easily walk up and observe the floor platforms. Here are some of my pictures. I apologize they are small but it makes for easier uploading. I think you can click on them for a larger view.

Police and protesters

There are police and fire officers everywhere. I really appreciated this and they seem to be good sports.

Since Sunday, I have not seen protesters. There are people trying to hand you things everywhere but I have not seen protesters. I believe the protest area is far from where the delegates are shuttled into the arena.
